Authorities reported several victims during an "active shooter" attack in the Mercy hospital district, located in the south side, which had resulted in a significant police presence on Monday afternoon.
Emergency teams were called near the hospital at 2525 S. Michigan Ave. around 3:20 pm
There were "multiple victim reports" in the attack, police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said in a tweet.
Fire officials called the Emergency Medical Service Plan II, sending at least 10 ambulances to the scene, due to an "active shooter" situation, said a spokesman for the service. fires.
An employee at the hospital stated that she was in her office when a notification was sent to a public address system asking those at the hospital to lock their doors. They were then evacuated and people were placed on CTA buses while the authorities were managing the situation.
"I do not know what happened," she said while getting on a bus.
"They told us to run, so we did," said a hospital employee.
Authorities warned people to stay out of the area. Fire crews were on the scene.
