Settler leaders described Airbnb's decision as "anti-Semitic".
In a measure of the depth of the conflict on the territory, a Palestinian leader said that Airbnb had not gone far enough.
Saeb Erekat, Secretary-General of the Palestine Liberation Organization, said the decision was "a positive first step," but Airbnb has not made it clear that "Israeli settlements in the West Bank, including in occupied East Jerusalem, are illegal and constitute war crimes. "
Human Rights Watch, the rights organization, said it has been talking with Airbnb about its lists in the West Bank for two years and urged other companies to follow suit. The group announced that it would issue a report entitled "Guest Rooms on Stolen Land: Tourist Letting Listings in the West Bank Settlements" on Tuesday.
Eliana Passentin, a 45-year-old resident of the settlement, said she had already indicated her home to Eli on Airbnb and that she was planning to do it again for the Hanukkah holiday in December.
Mrs. Passentin has emigrated and has lived with her family in Eli for 23 years. She said people from as far away as Nigeria had contacted her, wishing to pray in her garden overlooking the ancient Shiloh.
Ms. Passentin indicated the location of her housing in "Eli, Israel" because, she said, it was like nowhere else in Israel.
"They were misled," she said of Airbnb. "I hope that a lot of pressure will be exerted on the Airbnb C.E.O. and they will realize that they have made a serious mistake. "
Ms. Passentin said, "It's really about bringing people together, not about politics. This is the reason why governments are. We do not need Airbnb for this. "
