Maroubra beach was closed until 11am on Monday.

Many of Sydney's beaches are surrounded by mesh nets that protect swimmers from sharks. They are also equipped with whale alarms and pingers dolphins that deter animals.

But the program has been criticized for also targeting non-target marine animals.

In the last report on the program, it was found that 403 marine animals were caught in the net in 2017-2018. Targeted sharks were less than 10%, while most were non-target rays or sharks.

The Australian shark attack record Taronga indicates that 18 attacks have occurred in Australia this year.
