For the first time, after months of secrecy, prosecutors confirmed their understanding of the motivation for Chris's murder – and explained in detail the unbearable intimacy of how he chose to kill his wife and children.
Shan'ann, Rourke told the court, was strangled by Chris' bare hands: "He slowly took his life." No revenge, no anger after seeing Shan'ann attack his daughter Celeste, like Chris had claimed it to the authorities.

Rourke did not specify where the murders had been committed in the family home. Aside from the specter of Shan'ann falling asleep or unconsciousness when she was strangled, he did not provide further details about the crime.
After his wife and children died, Chris loaded their bodies into his truck and hid them on a remote oil yard where they were found a few days later.
Chris's motivation was simple, said Rourke: "He wanted a fresh start, to start a new relationship with a new love." (Chris had an affair with a colleague at the time, the police said.)
