UNITED NATIONS (AP) – United States Environment Chief Erik Solheim has resigned as a result of massive allegations of excessive spending for official travel in the world.

The former Norwegian diplomat and environment minister announced on Tuesday on the United Nations Environment Program website that he had received the final report of the audit of his official trip by the internal watchdog from the UK and withdrew on Thursday.

The conclusions of the audit were not disclosed. The British Guardian newspaper reported in September that a US internal audit project had revealed that Solheim had spent nearly $ 500,000 on air travel and hotels in just 22 months and that he had time.

US spokesman Stephane Dujarric said Secretary-General Antonio Guterres had accepted Solheim's resignation and acknowledged his "leading voice in bringing the world's attention to critical environmental issues."
