The CDC recommends consumers not to eat romaine lettuce, and retailers and restaurants should not use it because an outbreak of E. Coli is linked to this one.
The CDC issued a food security alert on Tuesday afternoon on its website.
Consumers who do not have any type of romaine lettuce at home should not eat or dispose of it, even if some of it was eaten and no one was sick, says the CDC.
The warning covers all types or uses of romaine lettuce, such as whole heads of romaine, romaine hearts, bags and boxes of pre-cut lettuce and mixed salads containing romaine, including lettuce romaine, spring mix and Caesar salad.
If you do not know if lettuce is Roman or if a salad mix contains romaine, do not eat it or throw it away.
Wash and disinfect the drawers or shelves of the refrigerators where the Roman was stored. Follow these five steps to clean your refrigerator.
If you have symptoms of E. coli infection:
- Talk to your health care provider.
- Write down what you have eaten in the week before your illness.
- Report your illness to the Department of Health.
- Help public health investigators by answering questions about your illness.
