Brazilian paleontologists have discovered in the rocks three well-preserved skeletons of one of the oldest types of long-necked dinosaurs lived 225 million years ago. This unknown science has reached a height of 1.5 meters and a length of up to 3.5 meters.
Macrocollum itaquii – distant relative of sauropods – a generally huge and heavy dinosaur with a long neck, walked on all fours (Brontosaurus and Diplodocus). Like sauropods, Macrocollum were herbivores, but unlike other parents, they walked on two legs.
Microcolony roamed the supercontinent Pangea, which was then South America. The main food of these vegetarians was ferns and gymnosperms, the plants that covered the continent.
"The morphology of the teeth indicates that this dinosaur was an herbivore," says Rodrigo Mueller of the University of Santa Maria (Brazil). – As a result, lengthening the neck may have provided this kind of competitive advantage to the collection of food resources, thus making it possible to reach the leaves of large trees. "
The fact that they were found together, according to scientists, proves that even at an early stage of evolution, dinosaurs were social animals.
