CAP GIRARDEAU, MB (AP) – A Missouri doctor pleaded guilty to illegally prescribing drugs in a case resulting from an undercover investigation.
Missouri Southeast reports that Dr. Michael Jessup went on appeal Monday. The issue is how he prescribed hydrocodone, an opioid pain reliever, and alprazolam, an anti-anxiety medication.
According to the indictment, an undercover officer visited the gynecologist in the Cape Girardeau area in 2016, claiming to have hip pain similar to that experienced by people with sciatica .
The plea agreement states that Jessup prescribed painkillers without requesting medical records or formulating a treatment plan. Prosecutors say Jessup then increased the dose in five follow-up exams in which he never asked how the agent's hip was or why the drugs were not detected in the urine tests. Physical therapy has never been recommended.
Sentencing is scheduled for February 19.
