ATLANTA – Hawks winger Vince Carter became the 22nd player in NBA history to score 25,000 points in the Atlanta 124-108 loss to the Toronto Raptors on Wednesday.
Carter, an eight-time star who played in his 21st season and his 1,423rd NBA career, clinched the bucket of goals in the final second of the game. Against the team for which he played his first six seasons in the NBA, Carter slammed home a rookie Kevin Huerter's pass for an offensive rebound. As the State Farm Arena crowd roared, an emotional Carter grabbed the ball after he had passed through the edge and closed his eyes.
After an illustrious career as a top scorer who produced some of the most iconic dunks in league history, Carter reinvented himself in the final leg of his career as a veteran mentor and stabilizer in cloakrooms.
After the final ring, the ball was introduced to Carter. He then went to the middle of the field and greeted the crowd in Atlanta.
The Hawks broadcast an honorary video on the overhead projector screen where Carter received congratulations from NBA notables, including the Hawks legend. Dominique Wilkins, a club member of 25,000 points.
