Kyrie Irving of the Celtics says that he's not planning to celebrate Thanksgiving: "Thanksgiving!"

The Boston Celtics struggles earlier this season continued Wednesday night with a 117-109 loss to the New York Knicks. Down 26, the Celtics made a strong comeback in the fourth quarter, but were disappointed, largely because of Trey Burke's clutch shot. Now at 9-9 on the season, there will be much to discuss regarding the Celtics' inability to meet expectations.

At the same time, there will be a lot of talk about one of Kyrie Irving's post-match quotes, in which he made it clear that he was not celebrating Thanksgiving. Tom Westerholm from MassLive was on the scene:

Boston Celtics star Kyrie Irving had finished talking about the team's frustrating 117-109 loss to the New York Knicks.

Irving thanked the reporter politely and then added that he was not celebrating Thanksgiving.

"(Exploratory) Thanksgiving," says Irving.

Irving then confirmed to Abby Chin of NBC Sports in Boston that his opposition to Thanksgiving was rooted in his Native American heritage.

While it may be surprising at first to hear Irving's severe thoughts about the holidays, it is important to remember the context. Irving has a Native heritage, as his grandmother belonged to the Standing Rock Sioux tribe and his now deceased mother had been adopted out of the tribe when she was young.

During the summer, Irving, who wears a tattoo of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribal logo on the back of the neck, has gone through a naming ceremony with the tribe with his sister. It was given the name of "little mountain".
