AAccording to a new report, an independent federal agency is reviewing donations made earlier this year to the 2014 Attorney General Matthew Whitaker's campaign.
Such contributions could violate the Hatch Act, which limits opportunities for federal government employees to participate in political activities.
CNN announced that four contributors donated $ 8,800 to Whitaker's Senate Senate Campaign Committee in January and February, while Whitaker was the Chief of Staff of the Department of Justice. The campaign committee still owes nearly $ 50,000 to Whitaker himself for his unsuccessful attempt to seat in the Iowa Senate.
American Oversight, a non-profit watchdog, said on Wednesday it had submitted complaints to Whitaker's Financial Disclosure Forms to the Office of Legal Counsel, citing and disclosing potential breaches of the Hatch Act. The organization says these contributions have been the first activity of the Whitaker campaign for several years.
A spokesman for the special council office confirmed to CNN that the office had received the complaint and indicated that a file had been opened. Neither the Department of Justice nor Whitaker commented on the network.
