Native Americans mark Thanksgiving with a day of mourning

PLYMOUTH, Mass. – Thanksgiving has nothing to celebrate for Native Americans, who gather in the city where pilgrims have settled for a solemn celebration of the National Day of Mourning.

The meeting at noon Thursday in downtown Plymouth, Massachusetts, will recall the sickness, racism and oppression brought by European settlers.

It is the 49th year that the North American Indians of New England are organizing the event on Thanksgiving Day.

Moonanum James, co-leader of the group, said: "The natives have no reason to celebrate the arrival of the pilgrims".

Participants will beat drums, pray and make public speeches. They will also express their solidarity with Latin American refugees being denied entry to the United States and condemning pipeline projects and fracking, which they say are unnecessarily and recklessly degrading the environment.
