A Chicago police officer outside of work hours shot and killed a teenager who, according to the police, was trying to rob him on the northwestern side on Thursday morning. Police said that a second suspect is in custody.

The incident occurred in 5800 block of North Talman Avenue at approximately 2:23 am, police said. The officer was in his car when police reported that two teenagers aged 16 and 17 had approached, pulled out a firearm and asked him to hand over his wallet.

The officer obeyed, but one of the teenagers reached out and it was at that time that the police said that the teenager had found the badge of the boy. ;officer. There was a fight and shots were fired.

"They see the head of the police, the offender with a gun points our gun at our officer and tells him not to move," said Chicago Deputy Police Chief Al Nagode. "The officer, knowing that he is armed, is forced to take out his gun and he shoots the individual armed with a gun, striking him."

The teenager who was shot was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. Police said his parents had recently gone missing after learning that he was no longer at home. They also told investigators that they thought he had taken his father's weapon.

Police said that the second teenager escaped and was later found by a police officer and placed in police custody.

A weapon was found on the scene, police said.

The Civil Liability Office of the Police is investigating the shooting. The agent involved will be assigned to routine administrative tasks for 30 days.
