Tributes poured in today after the death of Sen. Jose Peralta of New York, who died of an apparent heart attack on Thanksgiving Day, at the age of 47.
Peralta was a long-time Democrat representing Jackson Heights, Corona, Elmhurst, Woodside and Astoria Heights. He was the first American of Dominican descent to be elected to the Senate of the State. He leaves behind a woman, Evelyn, and two sons, New York Daily News reported.
In a statement, Chris Sosa, director of communications of the Democratic Senator, told ABC7 that Senator Peralta had died Wednesday.
He said: "We do not have any other details to disclose at this time and we ask that the privacy of the family be respected. Thank you to all those who have expressed words of kindness and support. "
The paper reported that Peralta frustrated many members of his party after becoming a member of the Republican-aligned Independent Democratic Conference in January 2017. He was then defeated at a Democratic primary by Jessica Ramos, who won the November elections.
Ramos paid tribute to Twitter today by writing: "Jose Peralta left too early. When I met him in 2003, I saw a world of promise for our community and, although years later, we do not agree on the issue, we all know he loved his community. He was a real public servant. "
After Peralta's death, she was not the only one to tweet sincere messages.
State Senator Mike Gianaris wrote: "Tragic news about Senator Peralta. My heart goes to his family. Rest In Peace. "Ruben Diaz Jr., President of the Bronx Borough, said:" Senator Peralta will be missed. He was a good father, a loving husband and a dedicated civil servant. Our city and our state are greatly diminished after losing it. Rest in peace, my friend. "
The newly elected Attorney General of New York State, Tish James, also tweeted earlier today"I am deeply saddened by the sudden death of my dear colleague Senator Jose Peralta.
"He has always been a devoted servant of the people of Queens and New York and we will always be grateful to him. My thoughts and prayers are with his loved ones right now. "
Senator Stewart-Cousins, Democratic Leader of the Senate of the State of New York, said in a statement released today: "This news is truly shocking and heartbreaking. My deepest condolences go out to his family and friends. He will still be part of the Senate family. New York Daily News reported that Peralta, a Queens College graduate, was first elected in 2002.
