New York politicians paid tribute to Senator Jose Peralta of New York State the day after his death.
Governor Cuomo said in a statement that Peralta was "a dedicated civil servant, a staunch defender of Queens and a pioneer as the first Dominican-American elected to the New York State Senate".
"As a member of the Assembly for eight years, then as a senator, he fought tirelessly to make a difference, and he will always be remembered for his service to Queens and the United States. all New Yorkers, "said Cuomo. Peralta, who represented a Queens neighborhood grouping various neighborhoods such as Corona, Elmhurst, Jackson Heights and Woodside, died of an apparent heart attack Wednesday night at the age of 47.
He was elected in March 2010. Previously, he had been a Member of Parliament in Queens.
He leaves behind a woman, Evelyn, and two sons.
Jessica Ramos, a former assistant mayor of Blasio who defeated Peralta in a Democratic primary this year, said in a tweet: "José Peralta left too early," accompanied by a photo of the politician.
"When I met him in 2003, I saw a world of promise for our community and, although years later, we do not agree on the question, I know deep down that he loved his community, "said Ramos about Peralta. "He was a real public servant. Strength and love for his wife, his sons and his relatives.
Ramos won the general election this month.
Other politicians and lawmakers have tweeted their condolences for Peralta.
