A scientist identified a new part of the human brain in a discovery that he compared to the search for a new star.

The new endorestiform nucleus sits in the inferior cerebellar peduncle at the junction of the brain and spinal cord. The lower cerebellar peduncle helps us with balance, fine motions of the motor and posture maintenance.

However, the work of the endorestiform nucleus itself remains mysterious for the moment.

Paxinos said that he could only guess his function, "but given the part of the brain where he was found, he might be involved in fine motor control."

The discovery has not yet been peer reviewed, according to Science Alert. Paxinos detailed the part of the brain in his book Human brainstem: Cytoarchitecture, Chemoarchitecture, Myeloarchitecture.

If supported and confirmed by other scientists, this discovery could increase our understanding of the brain. This could help researchers working on treatments for neurological diseases such as Parkinson's disease and motor neurons, said the scientist.

Paxinos said that he suspected the presence of the region for three decades, but that recently, equipment was the proof. To do this, he used staining and imaging techniques.

Lyndsey Collins-Praino of the University of Adelaide, who did not participate in the study, described the research as "intriguing" but stated that "no one is interested in this." it was "too early to know the true meaning".
