In Nigeria, the number of deaths due to an outbreak of Lassa fever in 22 states is close to 150, said Thursday the center for disease control in the country.

"Since the epidemics, there have been 143 deaths in confirmed cases and 17 probable cases. The case fatality rate is confirmed at 22.6%, "said Chimezie Anueyiagu, spokeswoman for the center, during an awareness meeting held in Abuja, the capital.

"The 22 states have registered at least one confirmed case of Lassa fever in 90 local administrative regions."

Anueyiagu estimated at 3,016 the total number of suspected cases of viral fever as of 11 November.

Of these, 559 were confirmed positive, including 17 probable cases observed, while 2,440 cases were confirmed negative, he said.

The center said it was planned to review the current guidelines and develop a five-year strategic plan for the fight against the disease in Nigeria.
