At least two police officers died in an armed attack on the Chinese consulate in Karachi, a coastal city in Pakistan, police said.

Eyewitnesses reported an explosion and gunfire at the Clifton site, but details are not yet known.

Gunmen appeared to have entered a part of the consulate – one official said that they had gone to the visa section.

Local TV channels have broadcast images of a plume of smoke, although the nature of the explosion is not clear.

Security forces were deployed and the area was cordoned off, Geo TV announced in Pakistan.

A security guard was also injured in the attack.

China, neighbor of Pakistan, is a close ally and the main benefactor of the country, investing huge sums in infrastructure projects.
