COLTS NECK, N.J. – The brother of one of the four homicide victims found in a New Jersey mansion on fire is innocent of having set fire to his own home and "any other potential charge," his lawyer said. Paul Caneiro is accused of setting his house on fire Tuesday in the Township of Ocean. A few hours later, the fire at his brother Keith would have been reported about 80 miles away in Colts Neck.
Keith Caneiro and his family were found dead and officials say all were killed in front of the fire.
The authorities said that they could neither confirm nor deny that Paul Caneiro was a suspect in the murders.
"My client maintains his innocence on this charge and on any other potential charge," said Caneiro's lawyer, Robert Honecker, at CNN this week. "His family fully supports his defense of this charge and no evidence has been produced that would indicate a reason for such conduct." Paul Caneiro was accused of using gasoline to burn his house while his wife and two daughters were inside. No one was injured in this fire, which was reported Tuesday at 5 am.
