Recently published documents in Chris Watts, Colorado man convicted of the murder of his pregnant wife and two daughters, show a marriage in ruins.
Watts, 33, worries a lot about adding a third child to the family, according to text messages exchanged between his wife, Shan-ann, aged 34, and a friend. The messages are part of more than 2,000 pages of documents published by the Weld County District Attorney's Office.
"Chris told me last night that he was very scared of this third baby," Shan wrote in a message, according to the local KDVR channel. "And he's happy with just Bella and Celeste and does not want another baby."
The friend consoled her. "He's just scared, everything will be fun once the baby is out."
Shan's ann is not convinced. "He's changed, I do not know who he is," she replied.
The texts were exchanged a few days before Watts killed Shan & Ann and their two little daughters, Bella, aged 4, and Celeste, aged 3, in mid-August. Watts was sentenced to five life sentences earlier this week in exchange for pleading guilty to a plethora of charges, including the illegal termination of an unborn child. Shan & Ann was 15 weeks pregnant at the time of his death.
In the posts, Shan & Ann also wrote on the fact that Watts showed less affection in recent weeks. "He did not touch me all week, kissed me, spoke to me, except when I try to figure out what's wrong," she said. .
Shan & Ann also shared her concerns with her husband. She wrote to him in July while she was on vacation with the two girls and told her that she needed him to meet her halfway.
When Watts said he was sorry, she said, "I try to give you space, but while you work and live the single life, wear our 3rd and fight daily with our two children and try to make money.
"It's not hard to like it and miss texting," she added. "If you do not think so, I understood it, but we have to talk, I kept looking at my phone all night and I did not get an answer from you."
The messages offer an intimate look at a failed relationship that seemed happy for many on the outside. Online, Shan's annoyed about her marriage. "I love Chris! He's the best dad we can ask," she posted on Facebook in June, accompanied by a screenshot of an SMS showing a image of an ultrasound.
