IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) – Miguel Recinos scored a 41-yard goal in the pouring rain as time passed and Iowa defeated Nebraska 31 to 28 on Friday, despite a 15-point lead.
Mekhi Sargent ran for a career-high 173 yards and scored two goals for the Hawkeyes (8-4, 5-4 Big Ten), who have won four straight wins over the Cornhuskers for the first time.
The Hawkeyes nearly spoiled this big moment though.
A curious decision by Iowa to pretend to score on the field in the 3-yard line of Nebraska failed, which led the Huskers to a 98-yard run. The score was 28-20 with 13:57 to go. Martinez then ran to 3 yards with 3:22 left and found Kade Warner at the back of the goal area to tie him up.
But late tight star T.J. Hockenson scored for Iowa with a 10-yard delay on fourth and eighths of play with 42 seconds to go – and Recinos managed to cross the post after missing his previous attempt.
Sargent scored late in the second quarter on a 15-yard run and early third on a 5-yard pass from Nate Stanley to help the Hawkeyes take the 28-13 advantage. But the Huskers and Adrian Martinez, their brilliant first-year quarterback, have shown resilience by almost stifling the stunning.
Martinez threw for 260 yards and two touchdowns to lead Nebraska (4-8, 3-6), who scored a 0-5 win on the road in 2018. The Huskers played without the star receiver of the injured JD Spielman for the second week in a row.

Senior receiver Stanley Morgan Jr. caught seven passes for 81 yards in the game. With 81 yards of gain, Morgan set career and season records in Nebraska. Morgan finished his career at 2,747 yards, surpassing Kenny Bell's previous record of 2,689 yards. He totaled 1,004 yards in 2018, beating his own season record of 986 receiving yards in 2017. Morgan is the first player in the school's history to have accumulated 1,000 yards in a season.
· Morgan earned a pass for the 38th consecutive game, setting a Nebraska record, improving the previous record of Johnny Rodgers, who had 37 straight games with one shot. Morgan has collected at least three assists in 23 of his last 24 games.
· Morgan finished the season with 70 receptions, placing second on the season-long receptions list and first among the largest receivers. He finished his career in Nebraska with a school record of 189 receptions.
Rookie quarterback Adrian Martinez totaled 336 yards of attacks, including 260 yards passing and 76 yards rushing. The 336-yard offense scored Martinez's seventh offensive game of the season, setting a Nebraska season record. Joe Ganz (2008) and Tommy Armstrong Jr. (2015) previously held the record with six offensive games totaling 300 yards in a season.
· Martinez has raised his total offensive yards to 3264 to register his seventh season of total offenses in the school's history. Martinez's total attack on the season is 3,246 yards, allowing him to finish fifth in the UN's single season chart.
· With 260 yards passing, Martinez finished the first year with 2,617 rushing yards, placing him eighth on the Nebraska Single Pass chart.
· Senior linebacker Dedrick Young had 10 tackles in the game to bring his career tackles total to 284, allowing him to finish fifth on the Nebraska career list. Young is the only player in Nebraska history to have registered at least 60 tackles in four consecutive seasons.
Linebacker Mohamed Barry scored 11 tackles, his seventh double-digit tie of the season. Barry is the first Husker to record seven double-digit games since American Lavonte David in 2010. Barry finished the season with 112 tackles, the highest number of tackles since David had 133 tackles in 2011.
· Freshman kicker, Barret Pickering, scored 27 and 46 yards in the second quarter, extending his consecutive goals series to 10. The 46-yard placement was the second-longest in the first season of the season. Pickering, after 47 rider last week against Michigan State.
Devine Ozigbo scored 50 yards and finished the season finishing with 1,082 yards to finish 27th in one season and 10th in Husker's seniors. Ozigbo completed her career in Nebraska with 2,196 rushing yards to finish tied for the Nebraska career rankings.
Underling Maurice Washington captured seven passes for a total of 102 yards. Washington has set career highs in both receptions and receiving yards, improving his four catches for 53 yards in Wisconsin. The 35-yard Washington reception in the second quarter was a long career, improving a 24-yard catch in Wisconsin. Washington also signed his first career touchdown pass with a 28-yard touchdown mark in the fourth quarter.
· The 14-yard, 98-yard, 5:12 Nebraska offense in the second half was the season's longest Husker in terms of yards and was the fourth over 90 yards of the season.
