COLTS NECK, NJ – The lawyer representing Paul Caneiro, accused of setting fire to his own home with his wife and adult daughters inside Tuesday, November 20, said his client was innocent of the current charges and possible futures – a possible reference to the murder of his brother, wife, and children in their Colts Neck estate on the same day. The Colts Neck House was also burned down.
Caneiro, 51, will remain at Monmouth County Prison in Freehold throughout the weekend, with his detention hearing scheduled for Wednesday, November 28 at 9 am
"My client is innocent," said Rob Honecker, partner of the famous Ansell law firm, Grimm and Aaron in New Jersey. Honecker told other media that Caneiro's wife, Susan, and her daughters, both 20 years old, were "in support" of their father. Patch asked him to specify:
"In the criminal complaint, his family is on the list of targeted victims, but they firmly believe that he has actually saved them," Honecker said. "It's him who woke them up and took them out of the house."
Caneiro allegedly fired two fires at his wife Susan Caneiro, located at 27 Tilton Drive, Ocean Twp. at 5:01 on Tuesday. A fire was fired at the back of the house and a second, smaller, at the adjoining garage door. Susan and the girls were sleeping, but Paul woke them all up and took them out of the house, his lawyer said.
"The smoke detectors went off and he woke up the family and took them out of the house," he said.
In fact, arrangements are made for Susan and the girls to visit Paul this weekend in prison, said his lawyer. Prior to that, Caneiro was in a secure part of the prison forbidden to visitors, said the lawyer, and refused to give details.

Honecker said that he was aware of the problems encountered in their two companies or in the division of the two brothers. About four people work at Square One and a neighboring tenant told NJ Advance Media that he would see Paul ride three or four times a week aboard a white Porsche.
"They were best friends and business partners, Keith was Paul's best man," said the lawyer. "By all accounts, Paul loved not only Keith, but his entire family."
Honecker said that he did not know what kind of work the brothers were doing or who they were working for.
"It's a very good question – it's an issue that prosecutors should be looking at," he said.
