FLORHAM PARK, N.J. – Josh McCown and Davis Webb alternately launched receivers conducting one-on-one runs to the end zone at the start of the practice. Sam Darnold stood there watching the two other quarterbacks of the Jets.
What seemed obvious Thursday when Darnold missed training for the second day in a row became official Friday. The rookie played again for Sunday's 7-3 Patriots clash at MetLife Stadium and will miss his second straight game due to a right foot injury.
"He did not train, so he went out," Todd Bowles said.
So it should be Alumni Day, so to speak, with respect to the QBs – the 39-year-old McCown versus 41-year-old Tom Brady. After being limited to training by a knee injury on Wednesday and missed training Friday due to an illness, Brady was called a suspect. But he expects to be there.
McCown will have to do better than in the last match that preceded the farewell. He made his season debut against the Bills and scored 17-for-34 for 135 yards. He made two interceptions in the 41-10 loss, marking the fourth consecutive loss to Jets 3-7. The attack scored only four touchdowns during this skid.
"It's not about Josh," said Bowles. "It's the crime in general. As a team, we have to play better. … everyone plays better, so we'll do better. "
Bowles said he did not know if Darnold would be ready for the next game in Tennessee. McCown will keep the seat warm in the meantime.
"He's a quarter-veteran and he's pretty good at training, he's still simple, fast and fast," said rookie Chris Herndon.
James Carpenter did not train all week. The left guard has opened all games – 58 in a row – since his arrival at the Jets in 2015. He played every game early last season. But it is doubtful because of a shoulder problem. Spencer Long started eight games in the middle, but he can also play the guard.
"Spence is getting the call this week," said left tackle Kelvin Beachum. "But certainly, I miss Carp. … It will be different, but for now, we live a lot as a team. So we have to find a way to make that happen with Spence. "
Quincy Enunwa said that "getting rid of untrained errors" – penalties / reversals – would help put the offense back on track.
"Regardless of the contents of the file, you always have a job to do at the end of the day," said the recipient. "Even if your team's goals may not be what you want, your personal goals must always be to compete and stage that you will fight whatever happens."
notableReceiver Robby Anderson (ankle) and linebacker Brandon Copeland (elbow) have had limited practice and are questionable. … Safety Marcus Maye (shoulder / inch) is uncertain. … The Patriots' tight back, Rob Gronkowski (ankle / back), is questionable, but he expects to play.
