PULLMAN, Wash. – Practicing the Washington University fight song is something members of a Washington State group never thought of doing, but the Cougars learned the notes on Friday before the rivalry match.
"I think" Bow Down to Washington "is going to be really good, so I think it will be a good day," said Cougars trumpet player Jazmine Edmiston.
This year, the biggest football match in Washington brought the teams together.
A bus carrying the UW fanfare crashed Thursday night on the way to the Apple Cup, preventing them from participating in the big game.
"It's a part of the Apple Cup, UW fans being here, our fans being here, their fight song is part of the Apple Cup as much as ours," said Andrew Bovenkamp, Who plays the Cougars percussion line.
On Friday morning, the Pumas quickly decided that the Huskies fight song would still be played.
"It's a demonstration of sportsmanship, of course, for their fans, but also support for what these students and their staff are experiencing, because it's a very traumatic event," said Troy Bennefield, director of the band. Bennefield said that there were a lot of things on the match. Although he wants his team to win, he said the most important thing was that everyone stays safe.
"No matter what happens in the rivalry, we are all Washingtonians and we all care about the well-being of these kids," said Bennefield.
