A diabetes management company offers free "virtual" care for the first 1,000 Georgians with type 2 diabetes to enroll in the program.

The promotion by Onduo, announced Tuesday, is part of the Massachusetts-based company's efforts to honor Diabetes Awareness Month this month.

Georgians can register and learn how to qualify on www.onduo.com/GA or by calling 1-833-HiOnduo (446-6386).

Diabetes is a chronic disease that affects the ability of the pancreas to produce insulin, which helps regulate blood glucose levels. With diabetes, the pancreas does not produce enough insulin to spread throughout the body, does not produce insulin at all or produces insulin that the body rejects.

In Georgia, more than 1 in 10 adults have diabetes. It's more than a million people. In the United States, 14% of American adults have diabetes, 10% knowing that they have diabetes and more than 4% not yet diagnosed.

Onduo already operates a virtual diabetes clinic in partnership with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Georgia. Blue Cross members receive supplies including a connected blood glucose meter, an A1c (blood glucose) kit at home, and test strips. They are also connected with a "coach" Onduo to help them manage the disease. (Here is a recent GHN article on the program.)

An app gives patients an image of what their sugar levels are doing during the day. The Diabetes Management Team can analyze the data and provide advice on diet, activities, lifestyle and medication management.
