Elizabeth Mayor Chris Bollwage said a man was touched on the wrist while he was in a hallway between Tommy Hilfiger and Marshalls stores. The shooting occurred shortly after 20 hours.

Clients who posted on social media during the incident described chaotic scenes in some areas as people were sheltering in stores or fleeing the Kapkowski Road Mall, just down the road. East of New Jersey Turnpike.

In addition, a major traffic jam disrupted the area when motorists left at the same time.

The mayor said the center had been open since 10 am on Thanksgiving Day and had served 25,000 clients. It was planned to close at 10 pm Friday.

The mall, operated by giant Simon, is New Jersey's largest retail and value center, with more than 200 stores under one roof. The Tommy Hilfiger store is the largest in the country, according to the mall's website.
