A man was wounded in a shootout in a New Jersey mall on Black Friday – at least the second shot takes place at a mall during one of the biggest shopping days of the year.
A shootout took place at The Mills, at Jersey Gardens in Elizabeth, NJ, less than half an hour southwest of Lower Manhattan, police said. The shooter is still not found.
The victim was touched on the wrist in a hallway between Marshalls and Tommy Hilfiger, announced the city of Elizabeth in a Facebook message. The post also indicated that the victim was not cooperating with the investigation.
The mall was evacuated and closed, police said.
"The malls' cameras are being examined to determine the circumstances of what happened and possibly identify the suspects," according to Elizabeth police.
The city said in its message that "about 25,000 customers" had crossed the mall since Wednesday morning and that the shooting took place a few hours before the scheduled closure on Friday night.
"Coming out of nowhere, we have seen people running, screaming and praying to be let into the store," said an employee at ABC's New York WABC.
A person was shot dead in a shopping mall in Hoover, Alabama on Thursday. Authorities said that an 18-year-old man and a 21-year-old man had quarreled at the mall and that the 18-year-old was shot dead. After reacting, the police opened fire and killed the 21-year-old, who they said was holding a handgun.
Police believe that a third party may have committed the shooting that seriously injured the 18-year-old who was still on the run.
A 12-year-old girl was also hit by a stray bullet, but her condition was stable.
In addition to the two shootings, two people were stabbed in a Macy's at Destiny USA – the former Carousel Center shopping center – in Syracuse, NY, on Friday afternoon. Officials from Onondaga County confirmed that the two men had sustained life – threatening injuries.
