MANDYA: At least 25 passengers were killed after a bus fell into a canal in Mandya district, Karnataka, on Saturday.

The incident occurred at the VC channel of the Cauvery River, in Kanaganamaradi village of Pandavapura taluk. Most of the dead are students.

According to locals, the bus plunged into the canal around 12:25. The locals who saw the bus plunge into the canal water rushed to rescue the passengers.

"25 people died, I think the driver was not driving properly, I'm going to find out, take some extra inputs," said Karnataka MP, CM G Parameshwara.

A boy who jumped off the bus is the only survivor.

"The death toll is not clear, all those inside the bus have died, only the surviving boy can give us more details, but he is currently in shock", said the police.

According to the authorities, all corpses will be sent to the hospital of MIMS medical college for autopsy.

Senior police officers and fire and emergency personnel rushed to the scene.

Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy, who is also in Mandya, is expected to visit the scene of the accident soon. The Chief Minister canceled his State Film Awards ceremony, scheduled tonight

Deputy Chief Minister G Parameshwara explained the driver's negligence following the accident and said he would look into the matter. The residents informed the police that the bus was in poor condition.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Congress President Rahul Gandhi, who are campaigning in Madhya Pradesh, went on Twitter to mourn the deaths of the passengers.
