Iranian President calls on Muslims to unite against the United States

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani on Saturday called on Muslims around the world to unite to oppose the United States.

"Submitting to the West led by America would be a betrayal against our religion … and against future generations of this region," Rouhani said at an international conference on the subject. Islamic unity in Tehran, in a speech televised live on state television, according to Reuters.

"We have the choice to either unfurl red carpets for criminals or forcefully oppose injustice and remain faithful to our prophet, our Quran and our Islam," he added.

Earlier this month, the Trump government reimposed the latest sanctions against Iran lifted as part of the 2015 nuclear deal struck by several nations and aimed at curbing Iran's nuclear program.

Earlier this month, Rouhani called the reimposition of sanctions "false and incorrect" and promised that "the Americans will be definitively defeated on this path".

Saudi Arabia is Iran's main regional rival and supports various parts of the conflict in Yemen and Syria.

"We are ready to defend the interests of the Saudi people against terrorism, aggression and the superpowers … and we are not asking for 450 billion dollars to do it," Rouhani said in a speech on Saturday, saying reference to the so-called arms deal between Americans and Saudis.
