BENGALURU: Actor Kannada and former Union Minister, MH Ambareesh, died Saturday night in a private hospital in Bengaluru, following a heart attack. He was 66 years old and his wife Sumalatha and his son Abhishek survived.

Ambareesh had not been doing well for a few years and was frequently hospitalized. In 2015, he was transferred to Singapore in an air ambulance where he surrendered miraculously. He suffered from kidney and lung problems.

According to family sources, the flamboyant actor collapsed at his home around 5 pm and was rushed to the hospital. The doctors declared him dead around 10:50 pm.

Ambareesh, during his film career covering more than four decades, has starred in more than 200 films. He began his career as a villain and became one of the popular heroes of Kannada movies.

He was also successful in politics and represented Mandya Lok Sabha in Parliament. He was Minister of Information in the Government Manmohan Singh between 2006 and 2007. He resigned from his ministerial position to express his solidarity with the farmers of his constituency on the issue of Cuavery.

He also served as Karnataka Housing Minister in the Congress Government headed by Siddaramaiah for four years.
