Samsung reaches final agreement with employees with cancer

At a press conference held in Seoul, South Korea, Samsung's president, Kinam Kim, acknowledged that Samsung had not "adequately managed the health threats" in its manufacturing facilities semiconductors and LCDs. Sharps, a Korean activist organization, has documented more than 200 individual cases of workers with illness after working in a Samsung factory. About 70 of these workers died, according to the company.

The apology and the promise of compensation marks the end of the company's clash with its former employees, which has lasted more than a decade. The controversy began in 2007 when taxi driver Hwang Sang-gi refused to accept a settlement from the company for the death of his 23-year-old daughter, who died of leukemia after having worked for a Samsung factory. Samsung has admitted to not having reacted to the problems encountered in its factories in 2014 and launched a fund that will disburse 100 billion won ($ 85.8 million) to compensate employees exposed to hazardous working conditions in 2015.
