President Muhammadu Buhari expressed his deep emotion at the killing of soldiers by Boko Haram terrorists in the village of Metele in Borno, saying his administration remained committed to the safety of military personnel and other citizens.
Buhari, reacting to Saturday's tragic incident, assured that steps had been taken immediately to ensure that "the loopholes that led to the victims are blocked, once and for all".
According to the President, "The armed forces and the intelligence services have worked hard in the fight against terrorism, and I am once again committing myself, as Commander-in-Chief, to give my full support to the total neutralization of Boko Haram. May the souls of the dead rest in peace. The president assured "their sacrifice will never be in vain."
He further stated: "No responsible commander-in-chief would rely on his oars or cross his hands to allow terrorists to endanger the lives of military personnel and other citizens.
"Our loyal forces have proven their strength against the terrorists and we are ready to give them all the necessary support, in terms of equipment and manpower, to successfully put an end to the renewed threat.
"In the coming days, I will engage the Army and Intelligence leaders in lengthy discussions about the next steps we will undertake."
The President noted that the fight against terrorism had taken on a global dimension requiring international collaboration among States facing similar security challenges.
He reassured Nigerians of his continued commitment to security and his efforts to maintain the momentum accumulated in previous notable successes against terrorists.
The president, however, warned Nigerians against turning national tragedy into political capital, noting that "members of the armed forces are one family, generally committed to the safety and security of all Nigerians".
