SUMMIT COUNTY, Colo. (CBS4) – Unsafe driving conditions on Interstate 70 caused a crash of about 20 vehicles involving a semi-truck on Saturday afternoon.
The Colorado State Patrol said the truck was leaking fuel.
Dozens of stranded motorists waited for hours for teams to clean up the mess at kilometer 204. The accident was evacuated around 4 pm, but the eastbound lanes were still closed to Frisco and Silverthorne because of other accidents, says CSP.
CSP advised these drivers to visit Silverthorne Recreation Center on Rainbow Drive or Frisco Summit Middle School to reduce traffic retention issues.
It is not known when these closures will be lifted.
CBS4 viewer Gilbert Ramos shared a first-hand video of the massive crash.
CSP and the Colorado Department of Transportation also report several other accidents that occurred in the I-70 in the high country.
Abundant snow fell for hours, causing slippery roads and almost white conditions.
At approximately 1630, the CDOT announced that there were 15 vehicles in rotation at kilometer 211 near Silverthorne. They say the eastbound lanes are closed.
