KAMPALA, Uganda – A Ugandan police official said that at least 10 people died in a boating accident on Lake Victoria.

Police spokesman Emilian Kayima said Saturday night that naval police units had fired 40 water survivors.

He added that search and rescue efforts would continue overnight for people suspected of being trapped underwater in the completely submerged boat. He gave no details about the cause of the accident.

We did not know right away how many people were on board.

Boat accidents are becoming more common on the main lakes of East Africa, including Lake Victoria, surrounded by Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda.

More than 200 people were killed in a Tanzanian ferry disaster in September, officials said was overcrowded.
