A Dallas real estate agent who was suffering from brain damage after being hospitalized in a clinic in Mexico last month after several plastic surgery interventions died, his lawyer said Saturday. Laura Avila was moved to palliative care earlier this month.

"In order for her death to be not in vain, people should think about Laura before looking for a cross – border discount surgery," said Avila 's lawyer, Larry Friedman, in a statement to CBS. News. "They should do their homework and investigate the experience, training and background of anyone BEFORE signing up. Always look before you jump!"

The interventions received by Avila included working on the nose and replacing a breast implant. Her sister Angie Avila had told CBS News that doctors from the Mexican hospital where her sister had been transferred had told them that Rino Center of Ciudad Juarez had put anesthesia at the wrong place in the spine of Laura, that her brain was swollen, that her kidneys were failing and that she had stopped.

Laura's fiancé, Enrique Cruz, said that he had researched the clinic and discovered positive reviews online. Angie Avila said they had family in Mexico and that their childhood often crossed the border to visit El Paso.

"It sounds crazy to say," They went to another country, "but for us, you know, it's at home – it's familiar," Angie Avila said.
