CONCORD, N.H. (AP) – The mid-term elections are over, but there is still a key competition in New Hampshire.
The Assembly will vote on December 5 on the Secretary of State's choice for the next two years. Lawmakers will choose between Bill Gardner, who has held this position for 42 years, and Colin Van Ostern, a Democratic colleague whose platform includes modernizing the office, his accountability and resistance to what he sees as an attempt to crack down voters.
Long revered for the protection of New Hampshire's first presidential primary, Gardner has been harshly criticized by Democrats for supporting Republican legislation to tighten voter registration rules and to serve on fraud commission President Donald Trump's election campaign.
New Hampshire, Maine, and Tennessee are the only states where the legislature elects the secretary of state.
