Sunday, new member of the Congress Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) has published a tweet stressing that seeking refugee status is "not a crime".
"Asking to be considered a refugee and claiming refugee status is not a crime," tweeted Ocasio-Cortez.
She then compared the situation of border migrants with Jews fleeing from Germany and targeted families in Rwanda.
She wrote:
It was not for Jewish families fleeing Germany.
It was not for targeted families fleeing Rwanda.
It was not for communities fleeing a war-torn Syria.
And it's not for those fleeing violence in Central America
The Ocasio-Cortez tweet appears to be a response to reports of the tear gas deployment at the US border on Sunday. She also quoted a report by NBC News showing a migrant family on the run in the same tweet.

Tear gas was reportedly fired by US border agents after migrants attempted to cross the border wall. The breeze carried tear gas forcing mothers and children – also in the crowd – to run.
The border was closed for part of Sunday but has now been reopened to pedestrian traffic.
Mexico plans to send back the people involved in the takeover of the border.
