SPOIL ALERT: Do not continue reading if you have not yet seen the finale of Season 9 of "The Walking Dead" entitled "Evolution"
In the finale of Season 9 of The Walking Dead, fans will finally have their first official look at the long-awaited villains, The Whisperers.
But first …
The rescue team consisting of Daryl (Norman Reedus), Jesus (Tom Payne), Aaron (Ross Marquand) and Dog meets a walking flock that does not move like a normal walking flock. But the group does not have time to worry about the behavior of the flock, because it must find Eugene (Josh McDermitt) before it is too late.
In Alexandria, Gabriel (Seth Gilliam) sits with Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) and tries to educate him in spirituality. Negan is happy to simply refer Gabriel, especially about his relationship with Rosita (Christian Serratos). Gabriel ended up frustrated, only to learn that Hilltop runners came to report that Rosita had been found injured in the woods.
Michonne (Danai Gurira) finally reached Hilltop with Siddiq (Avi Nash) and the new group: Magna (Nadia Hilker), Luke (Dan Fogler), Connie (Lauren Ridloff), Kelly (Angel Theory) and Yumiko (Eleanor Matsuura). ). Taking advantage of the cold relationship between communities, Hilltop initially closed its doors to those who approached until they surrendered their weapons.
Once inside, Michonne speaks to Tara (Alanna Masterson), who informs her of what they know about the Rosita-Eugene situation. Tara also informs the newcomers that Jesus will have to decide what will happen to them, but they expect to earn their living if they stay. Michonne also meets Carol (Melissa McBride), who returns to the Kingdom after deposing Henry (Matt Lintz). Carol asks that Alexandria send a delegation to the fair, but Michonne refuses once again.
Henry, meanwhile, began his apprenticeship with the blacksmith. He falls on Enid (Katelyn Nacon). Henry is enid loving, so he has a broken heart when he sees her kissing Alden (Callan McAuliffe). Later at dinner, Henry barely touches his food. When he goes to clean his plate, he meets three other young Hilltop residents: Gage (Jackson Pace), Addy (Kelley Mack) and Rodney (Joe Ando Hirsh). They noticed that Henry was languishing and decided to cheer him up by inviting him to their activities after normal working hours beyond the walls.
Michonne and Siddiq sit with an unconscious Rosita who wakes up suddenly. Rather than resting, she asks to go out after the research, claiming that they have no idea what they are facing.
Back with the research team, Daryl concludes that the flock is still following them. He intends to distract him by throwing an old alarm clock into the tall grass, pulling the flock to sound once it goes out. Once the flock is visible, Jesus realizes that he has doubled in size since the last time that they saw him.
As the hunt continues, a storm falls on the research team. They end up finding the barn where Eugene is hiding. Once they find him, he starts telling them that he and Rosita heard the marchers whispering to each other, and that the flock that followed the research group was also pursuing him. The other three do not believe it, until the flock begins to approach the barn.
Once on the road, Eugene shares the theory that walkers evolve and gives them the ability to speak and develop strategies. Daryl offers to stay behind and distract the flock, thus giving Jesus and Aaron the opportunity to secure Eugene, who is still hurt by his fall from the water castle.
In Alexandria, Negan continues to hit Gabriel, which brings him to take a picture of the former Savior while cleaning his cell. He tells Negan his frustration that he can not help Rosita because he is responsible for taking care of him. That night, Negan is sitting in his cell bouncing a balloon. When he passes the bars of his cell, Negan gets up and realizes that the door is unlocked.
Henry parties with the other children at the top of the hill in their forest lodge, where they drink some of their moon liquor. The group then shows Henry that a walker is trapped in a pit nearby. When they taunt and torment him, Henry intervenes and kills him with his staff. Later, Tara leads Earl the blacksmith (John Finn) to the cells under the main house of Hilltop. Henry is there, sleeping his drunkenness. He shares his story with Earl, who sympathizes with his own problems with alcohol.
Daryl uses dog firecrackers and barking to distract the flock again, but he is stunned when they ignore the hijacking and continue after Eugene, Aaron and Jesus. The trio moves as fast as they can, eventually hiding behind the stone walls of a cemetery. The flock passes through a small cut in the wall and continues after them. They try to open a metal door that they find but it is stuck. As the walkers get closer, Jesus and Aaron turn to them.
After sending a number of walkers, Michonne appears on the other side of the door and tries to get her out. Magna and Yumiko arrive right after Michonne, saying that they came to earn their living. Aaron will help with the door while Jesus continues to fight the walkers. While he is going to finish one, however, he suddenly breaks free and stabs Jesus with a hidden knife. As he does, he whispers in his ear: "You are where you do not belong."
The others are stunned, but more and more walkers start to attack with weapons in the dark. Fortunately, Daryl is here to launch some well placed crossbow tiles. They examine the walker who killed Jesus and Daryl discovers that it is actually a human who wore a walker's face mask.
