Kliff Kingsbury was sacked as a Texas Tech coach Sunday, and a man who held this position is apparently interested in the vacancy. the Avalanche diary of Lubbock reported Sunday that Mike Leach, currently coach of the state of Washington, is not only a target of sports director Kirby Hocutt, but a name that a large group of donors is pushing Hocutt to hire.
"The people who support it, it's not just one or two," said an anonymous source at the Avalanche Newspaper. "It's like a horde of people and maybe eight or ten who are like donors over a million dollars – they are serious people."
Leach was 84-42 at Texas Tech from 2000-09 to 11-2 in 2008 in a season in which the Red Raiders were at the heart of the national title race in November. It revolutionized not only the program's offense but all of the Big 12's and beyond. His attack against air raids set the tone for a decade of high octane offenses that originated at the conference and eventually spread throughout the country.
Leach's mandate in Lubbock, Texas, however, has taken a controversial turn. He was suspended on December 28, 2009 after ordering remote receiver Adam James, the son of former SMU star Craig James, to report to an equipment hangar the day after he was injured in the practice. Leach was fired two days later.
Leach is not the only high level target of Hocutt. the Avalanche Newspaper also reports that the school intends to contact the current West Virginia coach, Dana Holgorsen, who was a staff member of Leach at Texas Tech from 2000 to 2007. Holgorsen has a 61-40 in eight seasons in West Virginia and would have earned a spot in the Big 12 Match this year if the Mountaineers beat Oklahoma Friday night.
The report indicates that there is no indication that Holgorsen is interested in the opening but that the school would consider measuring its interest.
Texas Tech was 5-7 in 2018, its third consecutive season ending under .500.
