So the walkers are talking now, huh? Maybe we should call them the talkers.
But seriously: at this point, you probably know that walkers do not learn to speak or organize. There is something far more strange and unhealthy on foot and it is taken directly from The dead who walk comics.
The dead who walk The TV show has officially introduced the most terrifying group of villains in the comics series: the Whisperers. Whisperers look like the dead because they dress like dead. Whisperers wear masks made from zombie faces and use the disguise to wander among the herds.
The control of their environment by the Whisperers and this strange new world make it a group that Alexandria, Hilltop and Kingdom should absolutely fear. When The dead who walk Back in 2019, we will learn much more about this strange new group and how they plan to deal with communities.
Before that, we have collected a detailed analysis of how the conflict breaks down in the Walking Dead comics. We will cover the events that take place roughly between numbers 130 and 173. Huge spoiler follow for The dead who walk comic book and the potential future of the show. It is also important to note that while the series closely follows comics in the past, it occasionally broadcasts or remixes events. Do not consider this guide as a path laid out throughout the rest of season 9 and beyond.
The first meetings
The characters of The dead who walk Comics meet Spooky Whisperers. In fact, it is in a way that we have already seen in the show through the misadventure of Rosita and Eugene in the first half of the nine season. Towards the end of A new start arc (numbers 127-132), two Hilltop guards, Marco and Ken, explore unexplored areas around communities (Hilltop / Alexandria / Kingdom / Oceanside) when their horses are frightened by a flock of walkers.
Marco and Ken observe that this flock reacts strangely enough: they murmur. Terrified, Marco and Ken return to the hill and hear again the murmur of the dead. Only Marco returns to Hilltop after Ken has been injured in a horse accident and left for dead. Marco tries to share with Maggie (she's still at the head of Hilltop in the comics) and the rest of the community of these murmurings of zombies but no one believes it … until that's right. other survivors also meet them.
Dante (whose closest analogue is Alden) is sent to rescue Ken. He meets Whisperers and is kidnapped by them. Then Paul "Jesus" Monroe is attacked by the Whisperers while he is part of a group looking for a missing policeman. Jesus is able to fight the Whisperers and makes him a prisoner.
The captured Whisperer turns out to be a 16-year-old girl named Lydia, who gleefully tells all about her Hilltoppers team. Hilltop organizes an exchange with Whisperers: Lydia for Dante.
Very few character names to remember
So we know a little more about Whisperers and how they are introduced into the series. What about the characteristics of each of Whisperers? Who is their Negan or their governor? Who are the colorful characters involved in the group? Here's the thing: there are not a lot of "characters" in Whisperers themselves and that's by design. The Whisperers give up their names when they join the group in order to fully marry their bestial nature.
The Whisperers have a leader named Alpha, a second-in-command named Beta, then a lot of generic Whisperers, and so on.
Alpha is a reserved woman, strong and intimidating, named Alpha. She has a bald head and is played by Samantha Morton. Alpha is very much in charge and his dialogue often reveals why. She has a clear way of articulating the Whisperer M.O. to the point where it seems almost attractive. Of course, wearing the skin of the dead is a perfectly rational thing to do when the dead walk on Earth!
The second in command of Alpha is the physically imposing beta, played by Ryan Hurst in the show. The beta is huge. He is more than seven feet of pure muscle. He is so huge that his death mask does not completely cover his face. It is also very practical with knives. The customs of the Whisperer society dictate that the strongest of them be the leader. Beta is certainly the strongest physically but seems comfortable in his role as Alpha's bodyguard and confidant. To be a leader, he should probably kill Alpha, and he does not want to do that.
Then there is this Lydia. Lydia is the only Whisperer to have a name. That's because she does not like this nonsense of Whisperer. Lydia is actually the daughter of Alpha but the Whisperer family is not supposed to count. They are all animals and only the strongest survive. If Lydia can not handle that, she should leave. And in fact, Alpha asks Rick for a moment to make him a solid and bring him back to the top of the hill with him. Lydia will be played in the series by Cassady McClincy.
Increased hostilities
After the return of Hilltop, Lydia and the Whisperers, back from Dante, everything should be settled, right? Not really. You see, Lydia was brought back to Hilltop originally … where Carl Grimes is currently training to become a blacksmith. It is obvious that Carl falls in love with Lydia almost immediately because the pickings are thin in the apocalypse … even though the girls wear mortuary masks. When Lydia is sent back to the Whisperers, Carl follows them to their home, which is essentially an empty, empty field. Whisperers are very nomadic. If the series follows this scenario, it is likely that Carol's son, Henry, will be the boy to fall in love with Lydia.
Rick has to go and save the idiotic ass of his son. A group of Whisperers intercept Rick on the road and bring him back to meet his son. Alpha takes this opportunity to show Rick a really huge herd of walkers that the Whisperers have gathered. Rick can recover his son (and Lydia from elsewhere), but Alpha makes it clear that this herd will be unleashed on Alexandria if hostilities continue.
Welp! Hostilities continue. Not Rick's people but the Whisperers. Before meeting Rick, Alpha had infiltrated a massive fair in Alexandria (which the show teases quite regularly). There, Alpha managed to kill not one, not two, but twelve members of the community and put his head on spades a few kilometers from the communities, which represents an invisible border between communities and Whisperers. Among the dead are Rosita and Ezekiel …
Rick spends a few weeks trying to prevent his people from engaging in another war, but it soon becomes clear that it will take another armed conflict. He accuses Dwight of forming a militia.
Negan, the Whisperer
Technically, there is actually a fourth Whisperer whose name is known. That's because, for two glorious days, our old friend Negan becomes a Whisperer. Really!
While all this nonsense with the Whisperers collapses (Lydia prisoner exchange, row of severed heads, etc.), Negan is still safely buried in the prison under Alexandria. Then, with the hubbub of an approaching war, someone gets distracted and forgets to lock Negan's cage. Negan escapes and heads straight for Whisperers.
He is met by Beta, who hates him, and Alpha, who is intrigued by his talkative ways … somewhat "alpha". Negan says that he met them at random but that he is forced to admit that he was specifically looking for them. He convinces them to let him join their happy little group. This leads to a really whimsical montage, if such a thing exists in comics, where Negan leads the rustic life as Whisperer.
All is well with Negan and the Whisperers until Negan commits the cardinal sin: he stops an attempted rape among the Whisperers. Alpha and Beta are furious because sexual violence is allowed and encouraged in the Whisperer culture. These are all beasts, remember? Alpha is coming alone with Negan later in the night to discuss his vision of the world with him.
Negan responds by cutting her throat, decapitating her and bringing her head back to Rick as a pledge of peace.
The war of whisperers
No less than thirteen people have literally lost their heads at this stage. It is clear that war is the only option left for Whisperers and Rick survivors.
Honestly, the Whisperer War is not the most effective aspect of Whisperers' history in comics. On the one hand, we just have a war with Negan and the saviors. Secondly, to learn more about Whisperers and their strange society is much more satisfying than when the time of war comes.
There is really only one battle in this war. The Whisperer forces, led by Beta, meet the Militia forces, led by Dwight, in an open field. Thanks to Negan's tactical brilliance on people with Lucille (who is tragically torn apart), the Whisperers suffer heavy losses and are forced to retreat. Beta divides his exhausted army into two groups, one in Alexandria and one in Hilltop. The Hilltop group manages to burn Hilltop but is finally defeated.
As for the group of Alexandria …
The dire consequences
Whisperers end up losing The war of whisperers, (numbers 157-162), but not before having fired a real punk shot. Beta's forces are essentially exhausted and victory is impossible. Then he picks up his ball and goes away … and also frees a herd of biblically massive walkers, who roll towards Alexandria.
The Whisperer war could have ended quickly, but the flock is something completely different. The flock is the greatest existential threat that Alexandria has ever faced. What is worse is that Hilltop is incapacitated and the Kingdom continues to face a complex leadership situation.
Alexandria is able to repel the first wave of the flock thanks to the heroism of Rick and Negan (!!!). Then, Eugene invents a brilliant plan to attract the flock into the ocean.
In the end, Alexandria survives but at a high cost. Gabriel dies at the beginning of the war. This is unlikely to happen in the series now that Gabriel is playing a bigger role. Andrea dies trying to hijack the flock. Andrea is the closest comparison on the show? Michonne
Keep your loved ones close, Whisperers and Whisperer War will put a lot of characters in danger.
