CHAPEL HILL, NC —- With the announcement of his dismissal Sunday, the era of Larry Fedora at Chapel Hill is now over.
Fedora scored 45-43 overall in seven seasons in North Carolina and 28-28 in ACC. He was 6-21 since November 10, 2016.
The Fedora era was a strange seven years. He arrived in the midst of a college and NCAA scandal and had to recruit and play under this cloud for most of his term. The total time spent by Fedora in North Carolina can be described as mediocre, and the balance sheet confirms it. But it was an average that included very low ups and downs. There have also been a lot of dark seasons in between.
In 2015, everything clicked and the Tar Heels won 11 games, remained undefeated in ACC before reaching a record of 11-3, won the Coastal Division of ACC and have made an appearance in the match under the ACC against Clemson.
It was the peak, but there were more disappointments. In 2016, even with the eventual No. 2 repechage pick at quarterback, UNC only won eight games and lost against rivals N.C. State and Duke.
Then came the strong fall. Stricken by massive injuries to key players, Fedora led North Carolina to 3-9 in 2017. The quarterback struggles continued in 2018 and the Tar Heels were a bleak 2-9.
Under Fedora, UNC was 3-4 against N.C. State, 2-5 against Duke and 1-3 against East Carolina. He lost the last three contests against the three schools of the state.
Beyond the successes and failures on the ground, there have been many strange moments. It was seven strange years, not just on the ground, but through press conferences, small scandals, and strange incidents that were not expected. Below you will find an overview of the strange and memorable moments and situations experienced by Larry Fedora in North Carolina.
