FORT WORTH (CBSDFW.COM) – The Cook Children's Medical Center in Fort Worth warns parents of young children after a recent outbreak of respiratory syncytial virus or RSV.
Dr. Ramon Kinloch, pediatrician at Cook Children, said, "The VRS must be taken very seriously."
Cook Children's officials said last week that they had treated 178 confirmed cases of RSV in young children. Ninety percent of these children ended up in the emergency room.
Doctors say that they see a spike in the spread of RSV much earlier than usual.
Dr. Kinloch stated that the symptoms presented as a cold and that the body could usually fight it, but if the body could not do it and that it was not treated, it could become a lot more dangerous in younger patients.
"They may develop worsening respiratory symptoms that may lead to pneumonia or respiratory failure. These are the ones who will require visits to the hospital, "he said.
Dr. Kinloch said the best way to fight the spread of RSV in children is simple.
"Handwashing will be the first way to minimize the spread and prevent this spread."
If your child has RSV or symptoms that worry you as a parent, doctors tell you not to hesitate to see a doctor.
"If you are worried about a worsening of these symptoms and need to do more, talk to your doctor," said Dr. Kinloch.
