Lindsey Vonn announced that she would be retiring from ski racing after this month's World Championships in Sweden.
The all-time leader of the World Cup victories planned to retire in December, but she changed plans because of persistent knee pain, which she fully understood after failing in Italy last month.
While writing on Instagram, Vonn said, "It was a very emotional week to make the toughest decision of my life, but I recognized that I could not continue skiing. I will be competing at the World Downhill and SG (super-G) Championships next week in Are, Sweden, and this will be the last races of my career. "
The world championships open on Tuesday with the women's super-G. The women's downhill is scheduled for February 10th.
Vonn says, "My body is broken and it does not let me have the last season I dreamed of. My body screams me to stop and it's time for me to listen. "
