Hanley Ramirez is not the subject of a federal inquiry into a drug ring, the Boston Globe reported on Sunday.
The former Red Sox star, who was released by the team on June 1, has been the subject of rumors since ABC News Report On Friday, he was "watched as part of an ongoing federal and state investigation".
According to court documents obtained by The Globe, one of Ramirez's friends was arrested in April by the Massachusetts State Police, who acted on the recommendation of an informant. When the police asked to search the car, the man – whom the newspaper did not identify by name – mentioned that he had a package in the car for Ramirez. He then FaceTimed Ramirez, who agreed to let the police pick up the package.
The package contained two kilograms of fentanyl, a controlled substance.
The man was arrested for drug trafficking. According to the affidavit obtained by the Globe, the man "immediately began to declare that his friend [Ramirez] was not involved at all, and that the box was not for him
The man's attorney said that "his use of Mr. Ramirez's name was a misguided attempt to evade further scrutiny of the police."
This report exonerates Ramirez from the mystery sparked by Friday's report. Adam Katz, the hitter's agent, issued a statement Friday saying, "Hanley has no knowledge of the allegations contained in this media report and he is not aware of any investigation." A spokesman for the Red Sox had also denied any knowledge of an investigation and said that Ramirez had been released for baseball reasons.
Ramirez, 34, cut the .254 / .313 / .395 barrier with six home runs in 44 games when he was released.
