Two people died Sunday near the Detroit Coleman A. Young International Airport when a Cessna 210 sank and exploded.
The third person on board, the pilot, appears to have escaped the wreckage with the help of witnesses, according to WXYZ, an ABC Detroit subsidiary.
The pilot reported having had a problem with the landing gear of the aircraft and was running out of fuel before the accident, according to a statement from the Federal Aviation Administration.
The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the accident. The NTSB is expected to issue a preliminary report within 10 days.
When the plane descended, he struck a tree and returned, catching fire, said Captain Mark Thornton of the Detroit Police Department. No one on the ground was injured and no building was damaged.
"Brave" witnesses could help release the pilot, Thornton said. The pilot appeared to be consistent and was sent to the Detroit Receiving Hospital for treatment.
Witnesses told the police that the people who helped release the pilot used baseball bats to break glass in order to reach the inside of the burning wreck.
No deaths in the accident have been identified, pending notification from their families.
