SARANSK, Russia (AP) – Hundreds of Iranian fans have spent several hours around the hotel where the Portuguese national team is, making a lot of noise to try to disrupt the sleep of their opponents before a match decisive World Cup Monday.
Superstar Cristiano Ronaldo was filmed by Portuguese TV RTP late at night through the window using gestures to ask Iranian fans to shut up, but on Monday morning there were still a few dozen who were playing loud music in the center of Saransk.
Iran can only advance to the next stage of the World Cup as it defeats the champions of Europe. Portugal needs only one draw, but also aims to take first place in Group B ahead of Spain.
Saransk police said they received their first calls about the noise around 11 pm Sunday, when a first wave of Iranian fans arrived and began to sing in front of the hotel. This forced Ronaldo to show up, which convinced the fans to leave.
Then a second wave arrived and did not stop making noise for several hours. The police then blocked the roads nearby, but the main avenue through the hotel was still open, allowing Iranian fans to keep their efforts in smaller numbers.
Iran's fan and computer consultant, Mehdi Fayez, arrived Monday morning after reading messages from supporters saying that they needed to disturb Portugal to have a better chance of winning the match.
"I love Ronaldo, I love Portugal, but it 's a big game, we have to do everything right," said Fayez always cheerful, while he was holding an Iranian flag on the back of his head.
Fayoud Watchh, one of the many Iranian women who attend their first World Cup, did not agree.
"We came back from dinner and saw all these Iranians here, when I found the reason, I decided to leave," she said.
Around noon on Monday, Portugal players wandered around the hotel quickly, but it is not certain that they will walk around the city as they did before the other matches in Russia. .
