Although Anthony Bourdain and Darren Aronofsky have been friends since 2014, their last trip together to Bhutan in December for the season finale of Unknown parts was a pivotal moment in their friendship.
Reflecting on the episode, broadcast on Sunday, Aronofsky wrote a touching tribute for CNN, in which he spoke of the time he shared with Bourdain, who died by suicide on June 8th. The couple had already traveled together to Madagascar for the series. but Aronofsky wrote that "Bhutan was where I really got to know Tony."
The director noted how "it seems ironic now" that they concluded their visit to the small country of Southeast Asia by filming a Bhutanese death ritual.

"We debated the fate of the country, the fate of the world," said Aronofsky. "He was perplexed as to how the endless hunger of humanity to consume could be reduced." Do not we all want flat screen TVs? "He asked.

Bourdain himself addressed the issue of mortality throughout the episode. "It is considered enlightening and therapeutic to think of death for a few minutes a day," he says in a louder voice. "Life is anything but a dream."
Aronofsky, who led Mother!, Jennifer Lawrence's film that Bourdain called "her masterpiece," also paid tribute to Bourdain's humble personality in CNN's tribute.

"He never adjusted his hair or wasted makeup or a lighting setup," wrote Aronofsky. "He was always dressed perfectly for everything we did – never flashy, never underestimated.He just showed up, and he worked.I rarely saw the talent on his scale being so willingly present and real . "
Continuing, the director remarked, "Tony was just himself: humble, confident, genuine, playful, kind, he greeted each fan's request for a selfie with patience and a smile."

Immediately after Bourdain's death, Aronofsky issued a statement saying that he was "devastated" by the loss of his "faithful friend", which he called "an inspiration".
"Always sensitive, always connected, always curious, always fun, we had a good time exploring Madagascar and Bhutan together, I will never forget his spirit, his conviction, his professionalism, his passion, his love for his girl, his love for Asia and his children, his vision, his stories, his desire for justice and his sense of humor.Thank you Tony, "said his statement.

Last week, a toxicology report revealed that Bourdain, who had been cremated in France, had no narcotics in his system at the time of death. His remains and property were sent to his younger brother, Christopher, according to the New York Times.
Bourdain's mother, Gladys, told the publication that her family would have a small private ceremony as "he would like as little noise as possible".
