Six of the awards were voted on by the media: MVP, Year Coach, Year Rookie, Defensive Player of the Year, Sixth Man Award and Most Improved Player. Other finalists: Clint Capela, Houston Rockets; Spencer Dinwiddie, Brooklyn Nets
Victor Oladipo represented the improvement of teams and changing roles. In the case of Oladipo, he went from a good beginner in Oklahoma City to an All-Star while improving his numbers at all levels.

Rookie of the year
Winner: Ben Simmons, Philadelphia 76ers
Other finalists: Donovan Mitchell, Utah Jazz; Jayson Tatum, Boston Celtics
Simmons, the No. 1 pick in 2016, has averaged 15.8 points, 8.2 assists and 8.1 rebounds per game for a 52-game winning team this season. This is the third time in the last four seasons that the rookie of the year has moved on to an old No. 1 pick while Simmons joins the 2014 first pick Andrew Wiggins and Karl-Anthony Towns 2015 as members of the ROY club. Simmons is the first player to win the trophy after missing the entire season after being drafted as Blake Griffin, the top pick in 2009, won the rookie of the year title in 2010-11.

Coach of the year
The three finalists have unique stories with respect to adversity. Unfortunately for Dwane Casey, his big regular season in Toronto was not enough to save his job, although he had landed in Detroit. Quin Snyder overcame defeat of the Gordon Hayward star team during the off season and took Utah to start playing 19-28 in the playoffs. Hayward's opening and end-of-season injury also affected Brad Stevens, and Stevens still led Boston to 55 wins.
