MADISON, Wis. (AP) – Wisconsin agriculture officials quarantined a Sauk County breeding farm after a captive elk was tested positive for a chronic debilitating disease.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection announced Monday the quarantine of the farm Dennis B. Denman. The agency said in a press release that elk was a 5-year-old cow who died giving birth and that the National Veterinary Services Laboratory confirmed that the animal was infected.
The agency is studying how the animal has contracted the disease.
The release did not indicate when the elk died or when the laboratory confirmed the infection. DATCP spokesman Bill Cosh said in an email that he did not immediately have these details.
Quarantine means that no animal can leave or enter the farm.
