Australia still has hopes of reaching the knockout stage of the World Cup, but it will take a win in the Group C final and help to get there.
Australia faces Peru in Sochi, Russia on Tuesday, which needs a win and a defeat of Denmark against France in the finals to reach the knockout stages since 2006. Australia enters the day with three points and two points in the goal differential.
Australia played tight France in its opening, but succumbed to a 2-1 loss to tie Denmark 1-1. The two goals of this tournament came through Mile Jedinak's penalty shoot-out, and it takes a bit more to beat a Peruvian team that, while being 0-2-0 and already eliminated after two defeats of 1-0, played attacking football the most attractive and aggressive of any team on the field and was punished by an inability to finish.
The match began with Peru controlling possession, seeking to break Australia's strong defensive unit, while the Socceroos sought to counter Aaron Mooy's creativity in the middle. Frustrations rose for Australia while another foul on Cueva showed impatience on Bert van Marwijk's part. A free kick looking for Guerrero in the 24th minute was not enough as his head was easily picked up.
In the 27th minute, Pedro Gallese made a crucial stop as a great race and a shot from inside the area was stopped by the Veracruz cap. This was an alarm sign for La Blanquirroja, however, as Australia was not backing away.
Again, Australia was threatening, because in the 34th minute, a fantastic recovery of Tom Rogic found him face to face with Gallese, but the defensive unit managed to clear a corner. Australia pushed and Peru allowed it.
